In the late 1800’s as the population in the Leichhardt area began to grow, the natural water systems were being contaminated with sewerage creating a serious risk to public health. Thankfully in 1890 the Minister for public works was disgusted by the unsanitary conditions, he proposed separate stormwater systems be built. Leichhardt’s main stormwater drain “Hawthorn Canal” was one of the first nine purpose built stormwater drains constructed in Sydney in the 1890’s! The stormwater channel helped to improve public health and improved the health of residents in the area by reducing illness.

Italian immigration began in the 1920’s and increased rapidly after World War II. Leichhardt continues to have a strong Italian influence today which can be experienced through the delicious variety of Italian cuisine available in the shops and cafes along Norton Street. In 2000 the old Water Board Depot was transformed into the Italian Forum Shopping Complex for everyone to enjoy a piece of Italy right here in Sydney. If you want to experience a celebration of Italian culture, join in the yearly Norton Street Italian Festa held annually in October.
