Replacing sewer lines is quiet expensive and having a sewer system that does not work well is frustrating. Sewer maintenance can be done in a jiffy by using chemical based products, however, these products can damage your drainage system if not used properly and, fumes they emit are harmful for you. So, here are easy do’s and don’ts for sewer maintenance without the use of harmful chemicals.

Do!

    1. Cleaning the drain on a weekly basis can help keep it prevent blockages.

Weekly drain cleaning and observing proper care can make maintenance easier. Pour ¼ baking soda and ½ white vinegar down your sink drain to prevent build up in the walls. Flush the substances down with boiling water to rise them away after a while.

    2. Hire professional hand.

Have a professional plumber check your sewer pipes and plumbing system regularly. Preventing cracks from turning into breakage and repairing pinholes before they become bigger is best.

    3. Install sewer back flow device (SBDs).

Installation of an SBD doesn’t guarantee 100% back flow free home. However, it offers a lot of protection. This fixture depends heavily on the installation, foundation of your drainage system and maintenance on how it performs.

Don’t!

    1. Don’t rinse fat and grease in the kitchen sink.

Dumping these things down your drainage system is liable for build up and blockage. Make it a priority to designate a separate bin for fatty, greasy and oily substances in your kitchen. Also, see to it that this bin is emptied to the garbage bin by the end of the day to prevent rotting and unpleasant odour in your kitchen.

    2. Don’t flush dissoluble wastes down your drain.

Solid materials such as hot towels, hygiene products and nappies are sometimes made of plastic and other hard materials that make them good agents for blockage as they don’t dissolve in water.

    3. Don’t plant trees with dispersed roots near sewer systems.

Planning helps a great deal in both home up keep and clean up. Using your property blueprint, avoid planting trees and plants that have wide-spread roots near the pipelines. Root growth can cause pipe cracks and breakage in the future.

Always remember that prevention is better than cure. So, before your sewer create problems that disrupt your daily schedule, eliminate them while you still can by maintaining a perfect working sewer line system. Happy plumbing!
