The Step-by-Step Procedures of Pipe Bursting
Pipe bursting is just one of the many solutions in trenchless pipe replacement. A lot of people who are new with the pipe bursting method are often curious on how repairmen can conduct the solution by simply destroying the pipes and putting in a new pipe. This article will give you an in-depth look on how the pipe bursting procedure is done in an orderly fashion.
1. The Visual Inspection
In pipe bursting, the contractors who are doing the procedure must first take a visual inspection of the internal structure of the pipeline as well as its physical shape if it’s badly damaged or not. Another reason for the inspection is that the contractors will know the material composition of the pipe. Being able to identify the pipe material will help the contractors in knowing the suitable pipe bursting method used. You see, the bursting method must suit the type of pipe material. There are pipe materials that are still durable even though it has degraded, and thus, may require certain adjustments or addition to the bursting equipment.
2. Removal of obstructions that may affect the pipe bursting procedure
A bursting head is used to break the pipes, and it won’t properly bursts the pipes if there are some obstructions that are blocking the pathway of the equipment. During the visual inspection, the contractors will be able to check if there is blockage present–and remove them in a various selection of methods such as: high water pressure, small excavation, and many more.
3. Preparation phase
After the obstructions have been taken out of the main pipeline, the next step is to prepare the equipment such as the bursting head, winch machine, the new pipes, etc. While some of the equipment is being prepared, the other repair staff can start digging two excavation points. The bursting head and new pipe will go through one entry point while the exit area will be where the pulling machine will be used to pull the bursting head as well as the new pipe.
4. Application of the equipment and the materials
The bursting head is then inserted to a cable while the new pipe is attached at the other end. This equipment must first be stationed at the dig area and must also be properly fitted. If everything is in the right place, then the bursting head is pulled by the winch device; obliterating the old pipes, leaving no trace of its existence–when the bursting head is pulled, so does the new pipes that are just right its back.
5. Completing the job
It doesn’t mean that the pipes are already in place, that the entire work is done. There are still some final check-ups. Another visual inspection is to be done in order to check if there are no present issues with the new pipeline. Furthermore, others inspections are also conducted such as leak and pressure check-up. If there are no more issues and the new pipe system has undergone and passed all the tests then the pipe bursting procedure is completed.
